An Interactive Web Magazine About Silence and Noise
Silence Opens Doors is a new media venture by Muralla Media Works that examines silence and noise as cultural phenomena. Looking at diverse disciplines such as art, science, spirituality, politics, and biology, the multimedia stories draw connections to explore how silence is a response to and an activation of our modern experience. We have followed the New England Phonographers Union as they collect field recordings for a live performance in Maine, met with artist Zach Poff about his latest sound installation Radio Silence, interviewed writer George Prochnik on seeking out silent spaces in the urban landscape, met up with one of the founders of ACT-UP about the iconic Silence=Death logo, and more. Some of these stories have also been picked up by other media outlets, like XXXX Magazine and GritTV.
The video below is part of one of these multimedia stories (the full story, with text and slideshow is available here). It is a look at the history of Eastern State Penitentiary, a sustained ruin in downtown Philadelphia that was at one point a prison that launched an entire movement toward solitary confinement in the American justice system.
